Our Guide To Book Binding Types

As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat, so too there is more than one way to bind book. Knowing how you want a book bound before you design it can save painful minutes redoing your work to achieve the requirements of a particular binding style.

Saddle Stitching
The pages are collated together and then stapled in the middle to hold them together. Best used for booklets with a small number of pages (8-32 works best).  The page count of your document must be divisible by 4 (e.g. 8, 12, 16, 20 etc).

Wiro Binding
Twin Loop wire is used to hold the pages together. Best used for booklets that will be written in or that require tabs/dividers.

Burst/Perfect Binding
Heat and glue are used to bind the book together. Best used for books over 40 pages. Be sure to leave an inner margin of around 12mm as up to 5mm of the pages will fall inside the spine.

PUR Binding
A stronger glue than used with standard burst or perfect binding. Best used for books over 40 pages. Be sure to leave an inner margin of around 12mm as up to 5mm of the page will fall inside the spine.

Section Sewing
Good for books that are used frequently with over 200 pages. This binding method involves folding the book into individual sections and gluing those sections into the spine. An example of a section sewn book is a street directory or text book.
